The 11 Best Bodysuits of 2024, Tested and Reviewed

TL;DR

Out of all the bodysuits we tested, the Skims Square Neck Bodysuit impressed us the most with its signature fabric that magically sculpts while remaining ultra comfortable. For a great closet staple, we recommend Quince’s Long Sleeve Bodysuit, which comes in several neutral shades and, in fact, feels like second skin.

Bodysuits are the ultimate fashion solution. They stay tucked into your pants or skirt while smoothing your midsection and cinching your waist, and they can be layered under anything from oversized button-ups and blazers to bombers and leather jackets. “Bodysuits offer an effortless way to achieve a seamless look while offering a high level of comfort,” says stylist Catherine Bibeau. “They often feature two-in-one shapewear that enhances your figure while providing support.”

Yet the design can offer its own set of pitfalls like riding up, lack of adjustability, and complicated bathroom breaks. So, we tested 28 of the most popular bodysuits to see which ones are worth the hype. We gave each bodysuit to two testers with different body types. Over the course of two weeks, the testers wore the bodysuits to work and social events and made notes of the fit, comfort, durability, materials, and style. Here are the best bodysuits we don’t mind shimming into.

Skims Fits Everybody Square Neck Bodysuit

Fabric: Polyamide, elastane | Sizes: XXS–4X | Colors: 14 | Bottom: Thong

If you’re looking for an all-around excellent bodysuit, Skims won’t let you down. This bestseller features a subtle square neckline, narrow (but not too thin) straps, a low scoop back, high-cut leg openings, and thong coverage that disappears under pants and skirts. As part of the brand’s fan-favorite Fits Everybody line, the buttery-soft, incredibly stretchy fabric expands to four times its original size—so not only will it fit every body, but it’ll always fit. When we first took it out of the packaging, we thought it looked a little small, but the fabric beautifully sculpted our body, leaving us confident and comfortable. Not too thin yet not too thick, the fabric supported our chest even without a bra. And it’s durable too, with no ripping, pilling, or shrinking after wearing or washing.

Lauren Pardee, senior commerce editor: “The bodysuit fit my body better than I would have imagined it could. It stretched to fit me like a glove (without constricting any spaces), and it still sculpted and molded to my body incredibly. I was so happy with how it looked—especially how it cinched my waist. It’s not easy to feel confident in just a tank, and I did in this Skims one.”

Gap Modern T-Shirt Bodysuit

Fabric: Cotton, modal, spandex | Sizes: XXS–XXXL, tall | Colors: Black, white | Bottom: Brief

Nothing can replace the versatility of a good white T-shirt, but if you are tired of having to constantly tuck it back into your jeans, check out this bodysuit from Gap. It gives you the look of a classic crew neck with a full coverage, snap gusset bottom. While we often feel like our body has to conform to the shape of the bodysuit, we loved how this cotton modal blend followed the curves of our body for a comfortable, unrestrictive fit. Despite being buttery soft, the fabric didn’t succumb to regular wearing or washing. And it’s not see-through, even in the white version. You can’t beat the price and the versatility to dress it up or down.

Taylor, product tester: “The bodysuit was very comfortable! Super soft and basically seamless, no tags that dug into my skin. The button clasp did not bother me in any way, and it was easy to clasp and unclasp. The bodysuit stretched very nicely without pulling in any weird way, and it was very comfortable to wear all day!”

Wolford Colorado Body

Fabric: Cotton, polyamide, elastane | Sizes: XS–L | Colors: 9 | Bottom: Brief

Yes, we know, spending nearly $300 is A LOT for a bodysuit, but what if we told you this is one of the best ones we’ve tried? When we first took the product out of the packaging, we were worried the thick, opaque material might be uncomfortable, but it completely shocked us by being unbelievably soft, stretchy, and breathable. We could stretch, dance, and move our body as if we were naked, totally unrestricted. To add to the sleekness, the suit has a subtle sheen that can be seen in all nine colors while featuring soft cotton fabric on the inside. While this suit doesn’t sculpt as much as the Skims Bodysuit, it did offer enough support and coverage to ditch the bra. The price isn’t for everyone, but if you’re serious about investing in a bodysuit that you can wear for years, give it a try.

Chantia, product tester: “The material is definitely high quality. I have worn this for very active moments of walking, dancing, and other activities while out with friends, yet it still looks as good as new. For it to look so thick, fit my shape so well, and provide full coverage while being so stretchy and breathable is exceptional.”

Girlfriend Collective Cream Penny Square Neck Bodysuit

Fabric: Recycled plastic bottles, spandex | Sizes: XXS–6XL | Colors: 5 | Bottom: Brief or Thong

We’re all for inclusivity and sustainability, and this bodysuit checks both of those things off the list. Like most of the brand’s collection, it runs from XXS to 6XL and is mainly made from plastic water bottles. On top of that, it gives you options by coming in both a brief and thong bottom. We appreciated the added shelf bra on this square neck design, though we found those with large breasts still need more support. The fabric was soft and stretchy, with no seams or closures to dig into the skin. It’s worth noting that there aren’t buttons on the bottom, so going to the bathroom is a bit tricky. And if you have a long torso, you might want to size up.

Katherine, product tester: “I think the quality of the bodysuit was great. The material felt very high end, and it had a good weight to it without it being too heavy. The material was completely opaque, and I loved the ribbing on it. The bodysuit definitely held its shape throughout the testing period, and I didn’t notice any slip in quality.”

Amazon Mangopop Women's Square Neck Long Sleeve Bodysuit

Fabric: Rayon, spandex | Sizes: XS–XXL | Colors: 25 | Bottom: Brief

Amazon is our go-to for affordable style staples, and this bodysuit is the perfect example. It’s on the lower price spectrum yet still offers exceptional durability and fit. It was the ideal size for both of our testers, despite one having a longer torso, which can make bodysuit shopping so much harder. While the material is not as thick or compressive as some of the others on this list, the thin, breathable quality makes it a great pick for everyday casual wear. Think of it like your favorite long sleeve shirt but better.

Katie, product tester: “It was thin-ish but not enough to see through. The body suit held it’s shape really well but the snug arms did loosen slightly after wearing it the first night. No rips or tears at the end of testing this product!”

Quince Second Skin Square Neck Long Sleeve Bodysuit

Fabric: Nylon, spandex | Sizes: XS–XL | Colors: 4 | Bottom: Thong

A long-sleeve bodysuit is a great layering piece, especially when it comes in neutral colors like this one. We loved the suit’s “second skin” fabric, which was not too thin or thick and had the right amount of stretch and comfort without losing its shape. We were also impressed with the button closures at the bottom that were easy to clasp and comfortable. Our only complaint is that our bra was visible under the material, yet we didn’t feel comfortable going without one.

Tiffani, product tester: “I felt very chic and sexy in the bodysuit. The material was very soft to the touch and stretchy but did not loose its shape.”

Nuuds Seamless Scoop Tank Bodysuit

Fabric: Nylon, spandex | Sizes: XS–XXXL | Colors: 11 | Bottom: Thong

Thanks to the thick straps, this bodysuit lets you wear a “normal” bra, thus crowning it as our favorite tank style. Add in the deep scoop in the front and back, and you have a subtly sexy top. Yet what really sold us on this bodysuit was the double-lined material. It felt luxurious and tastefully cinched our postpartum stomach without feeling like a corset. Plus, it is opaque enough that we could wear a dark bra under a light shade without it peeking through. Our 5-foot-5-inch tester said the suit felt true to size, while the 5-foot-9-inch tester said it was a bit short in the torso, so consider sizing up if you are tall or have a long torso.

Allison, product tester: “This scoop-neck tank bodysuit felt like a second layer of buttery-soft skin. It had no tags, and the only button clasps (snaps) were at the crotch. It was stretchy during wear without losing its shape. I actually wore it to a brunch buffet and it accommodated my food baby quite nicely.”

SPANX Suit Yourself Long Sleeve Turtleneck Thong Bodysuit

Fabric: Polyester, elastane, cotton | Sizes: XS–3X | Colors: 2 | Bottom: Thong

Calling all those who want a turtleneck without the bulk, this one’s for you. This bodysuit is one of the softest pieces of clothing we own, yet it’s also breathable and warm. The material is opaque and stretchy, leaving us unrestricted every time we wear it. And the fabric still looked great after wearing and washing. Though it doesn’t have the degree of compression as the rest of the brand’s shapewear, it did cinch our waist and boosted our confidence. We recommend sizing up for the best fit.

Tatiana, product tester: “The bodysuit fit perfectly. I was so happy with how it looked on me. It cinched in my waist a tiny bit and looked really flattering on me. It was not too long or too short. It molded well against my body and looked smooth under clothing or on its own.”

Shapermint Essentials All Day Every Day Scoop Neck Bodysuit

Fabric: Nylon, spandex, cotton | Sizes: S–4XL | Colors: 8 | Bottom: Brief

Consider this your favorite shapewear bodysuit, except you can wear it on its own, instead of only under clothes. With medium compression, this suit smooths your stomach, butt, and upper back. We did feel the compression but it wasn’t too uncomfortable or restrictive. And the compression level held up after wearing and washing. Unlike other bodysuits, this one comes with adjustable straps as well as a wide three button gusset, which prevents riding up—though it can be harder to close.

Diella, product tester: “I like that you don’t have to wear a bra under it, and that it’s got a good level of compression. It was very smoothing, and cinches in at the waist. It is a great layering piece.”

Commando Ballet Off-Shoulder Bodysuit

Fabric: Nylon, elastane, cotton | Sizes: One Size | Colors: Black | Bottom: Thong

There’s something so effortlessly chic about an off-the-shoulder top. Yet if you’ve been scarred by constantly having to adjust the neckline, give this bodysuit a try. The neckline didn’t slip, even while dancing. This is likely due to the brand’s seamless microfiber material which molds to the body. And we skipped the strapless bra since the thick construction offered enough coverage and support. We’re a bit skeptical of anything one size fits all, yet the stretchy material fit our 5-foot-10-inch tester to a T. The peace of mind of being able to move around without an outfit malfunction is priceless.

Lauren Pardee, senior commerce editor: “I really loved how seamless the lines were and how stretchy the fabric was. I never once felt like my arms were restricted or that the off-the-shoulder neckline was going to slide down, even when dancing. I also love how breathable and lightweight the material is.”

lululemon Wundermost Ultra-Soft Nulu Square-Neck Sleeveless Bodysuit

Fabric: Nylon, Lycra elastane, | Sizes: XXS-1X | Colors: 6 | Bottom: Thong

Whether you like the edges of your bodysuit peeking through or the hourglass silhouette that a high-cut suit creates, this one from Lululemon offers plenty of leg. Just like your favorite leggings, this bodysuit is buttery soft, stretchy, and stays in mint condition despite wearing and washing. It’s not meant for workouts, but we could wear the suit with or without a bra. We overall loved how it looked, even though it offered less sculpting powers than others. Just note that the plastic buttons take some time to finesse.

Bailey, product tester: “The bodysuit fit my body very well. It was tight but not too tight and hugged in all the right places. I love that it’s a thong bodysuit without noticeable seams, so I could wear it under any clothes.”

What to Look for When Buying a Bodysuit

  • Fabric: Overheating, sweating, or feeling too restricted in a bodysuit is never, ever fun. When browsing options, look for fabrics that are not only stretchy but also breathable and moisture-wicking. Many bodysuits feature a primary fiber, such as nylon, cotton, viscose, or rayon, with a small amount of spandex or elastane woven in for flexibility and stretch. If you go for a shaping design, the material might be thicker and more compressive.
  • Size and Fit: Finding the right fit is also crucial. Even when a bodysuit is technically true to size, it’ll often feel tighter than a regular shirt since the panties and shoulders pull in opposite directions—similar to a one-piece swimsuit. Check the brand’s size guide for insight, and consider how you’ll wear the bodysuit, whether as shapewear, an undershirt, or as your main shirt. If you want a gentler, not-too-snug fit, order a size up from what you normally wear.
  • Color: As wardrobe staples that often act as undershirts, bodysuits typically come in nude shades to complement different skin tones. You’ll also find other neutrals, like black, white, navy, and gray. There’s nothing wrong with a pop of color, but you might get more wear out of a more versatile hue.

How We Tested Bodysuits

Byrdie / Elena Garcia

To find the best bodysuits, we first compiled a list of 28 of the most promising styles, based on expert advice, customer reviews, and past research and experience. We then gave each bodysuit to two different testers with different body types. Over the course of two weeks, our testers regularly wore and washed the bodysuits. We asked them to rate the bodysuits based on the following factors:

  • Fit: Each tester selected a bodysuit based on the product’s size guide, and rated how well it fit their body to determine if it’s true to size. We paid extra attention to how well it fit us in the torso, since bodysuits can be tricky when you have a long torso. Many bodysuits don’t have adjustable features, so we noted if the straps or sleeves were too long or too tight.
  • Comfort: Even if a bodysuit is technically the correct size, it can still be uncomfortable. So we looked for designs that stuck the right balance of being supportive and sculpting, without being too tight or restrictive. We also noted if the material was stretchy, breathable, and soft, and how confident we felt in the bodysuit.
  • Ease of Use: If you’ve tried enough bodysuits, you’ll know what we mean by some aren’t the most user-friendly. We looked for bodysuits that were easy to put on and take off, and if they had clasps at the bottom, we looked for those that were easy to clasp and unclasp. We discarded any designs that rode up too much or were too uncomfortable.
  • Durability: We observed how well the bodysuit held up after wearing and washing, noting any piling, ripping, fading, or loose threads. We also noted if the material stretched out too much and lost its shape.
  • Value: As you can see from this list, bodysuits can range from $20-$300. We asked each tester to keep all the following factors in mind and rate the overall value of the product. We only recommend styles that we believe are worth the price.

FAQ

  • Bodysuits can be styled many ways—as an undershirt or layering piece under a maxi skirt, sleeveless dress, or cropped jacket. “We can layer them under blazers to elevate them for work or with a pair of jeans and ballet flats for an off-duty model approach,” says fashion expert Laura Silvia Gesuito. Stripe & Stare co-founder Katie Lopes loves styling them under sweaters. A bodysuit can be the primary top for an outfit or even worn as shapewear.

  • You can wear underwear with a bodysuit, but you don’t have to. According to Lopes, it’s about a 50/50 split in terms of wearing panties or “going commando” (if you can call it that) in a bodysuit—at least in her office. The panty portion of most bodysuits features a cotton gusset to provide breathability in the crotch area (like regular underwear), but some may not offer the amount of coverage you want. It really comes down to comfort and personal preference.

  • Bodysuits are known for riding up, but they don’t have to. “I would opt for thong or high cut designs as they’re less likely to ride up, and they generally have less material around the hips and legs which prevents bunching around the crotch area,” says Bibeau. “If you still feel the bodysuit is uncomfortable around the crotch, I’d consider sizing up to ensure there’s enough fabric for a comfy fit.”

  • Depending on the size of your chest and the fit of the bodysuit, you may still want to wear a bra underneath, which can be tricky as the formfitting nature of bodysuits aren’t so forgiving. Bibeau recommends going for lightly lined or molded seamless cups that give shape without lines. “Wireless bras are typically more comfortable and less noticeable under a bodysuit,” says Bibeau.
